What BS 7533 covers

The series was consolidated from an older 12-part set: BS 7533-101:2021 merged the former parts 1, 2, 8, 10 and 12 into a single structural-design code of practice, simplifying design and reducing the risk of specification errors.

The two core parts pair up cleanly — BS 7533-101 governs the structural design of the pavement, while BS 7533-102:2025 governs how it is actually installed, covering every layer above formation: capping, sub-base, base, bedding and surface.

For domestic and light-use paving, BS 7533-102 covers construction in traffic category 3 and below where a full BS 7533-101 structural design has not been carried out — which is why a patio or driveway can be built to the standard without a bespoke engineering design. BS 7533-101 applies to loading up to 11,000 kg axle load and 30 million standard axles (msa) cumulative traffic, and explicitly excludes aircraft pavements, ports, heavy industrial areas, bridge decks and suspended slabs.

Permeable (SuDS) pavements have their own current part: BS 7533-103:2026, published 12 March 2026, which superseded the older standalone BS 7533-13:2009 (withdrawn the same day). BS 7533-103 covers the design and installation of modular permeable pavements — including concrete blocks and flags, natural stone, clay pavers and porcelain — up to 11,000 kg axle load, and is the standard to follow where a driveway must manage its own surface water under Building Regulations Part H.

Edge restraint is a structural requirement, not an optional extra: the series covers kerbs (concrete kerbs to BS EN 1340), because an unbound or bound pavement is incomplete without a restraint to resist the lateral thrust of traffic and seasonal movement.
