Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste should I allow for tiles?

10% is standard for square rooms. If you are laying staggered joints, diagonal patterns, or have lots of obstacles (like a bathroom suite), allow 15%.

Should I start tiling from the top or bottom?

Always start tiling from a level timber batten fixed to the wall roughly one tile up from the floor/skirting. Floors are rarely perfectly level, so the bottom row is cut to fit last.

What size grout line should I use?

For ceramic wall tiles, a 2mm or 3mm grout line is standard. For floor tiles, 3mm to 5mm is common. Natural stone tiles with uneven edges may require wider gaps to hide imperfections.

Do I need to prime walls before tiling?

Yes, highly absorbent surfaces like fresh plaster or plasterboard should usually be primed with an acrylic primer (never PVA) to stop the wall immediately sucking the moisture from the tile adhesive.
