BS 3882:2015 — Specification for topsoil

In short: BS 3882 is the British Standard for traded topsoil, defining multipurpose and specific-purpose soil grades, pH ranges, and nutrient contents.

What BS 3882 covers

It applies to topsoil that is moved or traded (not topsoil graded in situ), so 'BS 3882 topsoil' from a supplier is a defined, lab-tested product rather than unscreened spoil. Compliance requires every tested parameter to fall within the permitted range for the claimed grade.

The 2015 edition replaced the old Premium / General Purpose / Economy grades with just two: Multipurpose topsoil (fit for most grass, trees, shrubs and herbaceous planting) and Specific Purpose topsoil for specialist uses — Acidic, Calcareous, Low Fertility, and the two low-fertility combinations.

The minimum test set covers pH, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and nitrogen, plus texture, organic matter, coarse fragments, electrical conductivity, visible contaminants and phytotoxic elements (zinc, copper, nickel). A carbon-to-nitrogen ratio below 20:1 is required for the main grades.

On depth, BS 3882:2015 (Annex A) recommends that spread topsoil should not normally exceed 300mm, with loosened subsoil (to BS 8601:2013) making up the rest of the minimum rooting depth — normally 450mm for grass, 600mm for shrubs and 900mm for trees. Capping topsoil at 300mm and de-compacting the receiving ground avoids the anaerobic, over-compacted conditions that are a common cause of planting failure (as detailed in the Leeds City Council Landscape Planning Guidance).
